Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Many of you who visit this page will know me either as a friend or someone I have looked after in my alter ego as an oncology/haematology nurse. One thing you will not know about me is that over 14 years ago I lost my mum to Myeloma. Her disease progression was rapid and from diagnosis to end of life was 8 months. It was a painful journey for both of us. For me being a nurse but unable to do anything but watch mum slowly succumb to the disease. A woman who was unable to stand because her spine had crumbled so much the stress on her spinal cord was too great and the pain became unbearable. Her height reduced from 5'6" to 4'9". The treatments available now for the treatment of Myeloma were certainly not around then and I often wonder if her quality of life would have been better if those life extending drugs were around then.
The decision to take part in the london to paris bike ride was not done on a silly whim but on the belief that if I could make just a tiny difference to someone with myeloma by raising funds for valuable research then maybe I might offer the chance that someones mum, dad, brother or sister will get the the drugs that were not available to my mum.
It will be a hard task training for this event. 500 kilometers is a fair distance, but I shall do in the knowledge that someone, somewhere will benefit. I shall be wearing a locket that belonged to my mum during the ride as a reminder of her.
Thank you so much and I really appreciate the time you have taken to read my story.
