It’s unacceptable that more than half of people diagnosed with the deadliest common cancer die within three months. That’s why they need and deserve more. More research, more funding, more breakthroughs. More than hope. Together we’ll make that possible.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

On the 23rd August this year a group of us plan to climb Ben Nevis to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer UK in memory of our mum, Anne Buckley.  This date is particularly poignant as it is the day after what would of been mums 60th birthday.

We were staggered at the amount of donations we received after mum died and it only demonstrated to us how much she was loved by everyone who knew her.  Now its time to take on a personal challenge to raise as much as we can for Pancreatic Cancer UK.  We support the "Campaign for Hope" and long for an improvement in awareness and survival rates.

This is a fully self funded challenge - which means every penny donated will go to the charity.

We lost our amazing mum on the 22nd Decemeber 2011 to Pancreatic Cancer just 4 weeks after diagnosis.

Those 4 weeks we experienced a traumatic rollercoaster of emotions which will stay with us forever.

On learning of mums diagnosis then discovering the shocking 3% 5 year survival rate we were left distraught but had to try and cling on to some hope that mum could defy the odds.  From that day we vowed to do everything in our power to help change those statistics by raising awareness and fundraising for research.

Please sponsor us whatever you can, every donation no matter how much really means the world to us.

Thank you xxx

Some statistics about Pancreatic Cancer and why we are doing this!

  • Pancreatic Cancer has the worst survival rate of all cancers
  • 5 year survival is only 3%.  This figure has not changed in over 40 years.
  • Relative survival to one year is less than 20% and the UK has one of the worst rates in Europe
  • 22 people a day die from pancreatic cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in the UK
  • Pancreatic cancer receives only 1% per cent of overall research funding
  • Only 10% of patients are eligible for potentially curative surgery due to late diagnosis
  • Patients able to have surgery to remove the tumour have up to a 30 per cent chance of surviving five years
  • 50% of people are diagnosed as an emergency in our A&E system
  • The average life expectancy on diagnosis is four to six months
  • It is the UK’s ninth most common cancer

A diagnosis of cancer is terrifying, imagine being diagnosed then facing these figures, we long for an improvement in this statistics.
