Story

Thank you so much for taking time to look at my fundraising page.

I am a physiotherapist at the Midlands Centre for Spinal injuries at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital. We provide specialist rehabilitation for people who have had injuries to their spinal cord. This means they often have a loss of feeling, movement (paralysis) and altered functions such as temperature regulation, bladder and bowel control. Many of our patients need to use a wheelchair for all their mobility for the rest of their lives.

I've been wanting to raise money for where I work for a long time as our patients deserve the best opportunities for rehabilitation we can provide and this fund helps us do that. I am terrified of this tandem paraglide but have been inspired to do something that scares me. Our patients face, what feel like insurmountable challenges everyday, so I'm sure I can do just this one!

The Spinal Injuries Activities fund means that the team can extend the patients’ rehabilitation by  accompanying them out into the community before they are discharged home. It means we can provide invaluable opportunities to negotiate  unexpected  obstacles and problem solve situations with the guidance/assistance of our dedicated staff.

Patients experience eating out/negotiating shops, disabled toilets/going to the cinema and other everyday events alongside the support of the therapy team. This is hugely beneficial for developing confidence and independence.

Without this money, we are unable to provide these opportunities and patients go home without these really important skills.

If I can raise even more than the target we would be able to take  a small group of patients who have recently left hospital to the Calvert Trust in Keswick for an outward-bound holiday to gain confidence and experience new challenges with the support from our amazing MCSI staff. I will update the page with another target if this becomes a possibility.

A huge thank you to Mick Bird-Jones of YX paragliding school for being overwhelmingly generous in donating the experience and to Steve Metcalfe for inspiring me to take on this challenge.

Thank you for donating. I’m so grateful.
