Swim the length of Panama Canal · 28 January 2011

St Gemma's Hospice is a local, independent charity providing the best possible care and support for people in Leeds with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. We support patients and their families, both in the Hospice and in the community, at any stage of their illness.

Story

From the 28th October I'll be swimming the Panama canal!!!……

……. unfortunately I'm not going to Central America to do this but I will be doing the 48 mile stretch in my local pool over the next 3 months. Basically I'll have to swim the following:

  • The length of the Panama Canal is 48 miles (77km or 77,249m).
  • In a 25 metre pool this means 3,090 lengths.
  • 48 miles of an Olympic size pool is 1,545 lengths.
  • Miles = 4 miles every week for 12 weeks to complete the challenge.
  • Lengths = 257 lengths of a 25 metre pool every week for 12 weeks.

This is in aid of St Gemma's Hospice in Leeds who do invaluable work providing specialist medical and nursing care for people with life threatening illnesses, predominantly cancer, along with support for their families.
