Ruth's London Marathon Challenge

London Marathon 2023 · 23 April 2023 ·
I am delighted to be running the London Marathon this year in memory of my beautiful sister Ellie who died suddenly due to an undiagnosed heart condition. Ellie was only 20 years old when she passed away after being disturbed from her sleep. It took
over 12 years for us to learn that she was a victim of Sudden Arrythmic Death Syndrome, SADS. It’s heartbreaking to know that each week in the UK, 12 apparently young fit and healthy people die as a result of SADS just as Ellie did in 2001.
Cardiac Risk In The Young (CRY) are a charity who
provide screening for young people so as to prevent these tragic events. They train young doctors to become specialists in this complex area of cardiology. These doctors undergo training at a specialist centre in St George's Hospital, London under the leadership of Professor Sanjay Sharma. After completing this rigorous training program they are then able to disperse into communities, now highly skilled and competent in managing complex cardiac abnormalities. I am very privileged to
be under the care of one of these specialists who now practices in Wales. I have been diagnosed with Long QT syndrome an inherited cardiac condition that can result in sudden death. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have an amazing team of cardiac specialists who closely monitor my heart and have now given me the go ahead to run marathons!
I am so excited to be running the London Marathon alongside my incredibly talented consultant Dr Zaidi, who is not only a remarkable clinician but also an incredibly strong runner. We are both raising money for Cardiac Risk In The Young.
Please do support us and donate kindly so that CRY can continue to provide the amazing services that they do and help save lives.

Every week in the UK at least 12 apparently fit and healthy young people die of undiagnosed cardiac conditions. With your donation, CRY can reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death (YSCD) by working with cardiologists and family doctors to establish good practice and appropriate screening facilities to promote and protect the cardiac health of our young. By supporting CRY you will help save young lives from these potentially fatal cardiac conditions. See how your support can help by visiting www.c-r-y.org.uk
