The Beads of courage programme is designed to provide additional support for children undergoing serious illness and treatments. Major benefits of the programme are that it helps to decrease illness related distress, increases the uses of positive coping strategies, helps children find meaning in illness and restores a sense of self in children coping with a serious illness. The children's beads of courage also help others to understand what the children go through. Each bead is their way of saying "this isn't easy but I did it" this wonderful support system shows my little boy William that everything he has to have done from tubes changes to having his tube peg site cleaned daily is a normal thing for him but they help all kids with getting through all non normal medical stuff they had to deal with it shows that they can be just normal little people and it helps explain to people what they all have to go through
