National FASD's mission is to educate, raise awareness and take action to prevent Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders and to support people with FASD and their carers. We provide education about the risks of alcohol consumption during pregnancy to prevent lifelong brain injury and other disabilities.

Story

9 years ago I took custody of my niece and nephew who are now aged 10 and 11. At the age of 4 my nephew was diagnosed with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder which led to the diagnosis of Autism, ADHD and Attachment Disorder.

Life has had some crazy ups and downs on a daily basis due to situations that would seem straight forward to us but can cause major disruption for our nephew, these include sensory issues, concept of time, controlling and expressing emotions. This can lead to uncontrollable violent outbursts and lack of empathy for others in that current situation. He has so much love to give and its heartbreaking because although he wants to, the sensory overload can just overwhelm him. I love my boy and I will always be here for him. I just wish I could change the world for him.

Over the years I realised how little awareness there is of Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder before pregnancy, so I am will to do as much as I can to raise more awareness.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
