Story

When I started running, it gave me a sense of achievement and pride in myself. I loved the fitness aspect of it and because of this decided to run the half marathon in 2012.

This year I relocated to Brighton and started running along the beach in the mornings, whilst enjoying the sunrise I became very aware of the people sleeping in shelters along the beach and seeing this homelessness made me really aware of people struggling in the community.

This is why I have decided to run the 2013 Brighton Half Marathon for the Young Peoples Centre (YPC). The YPC support young people aged 13 - 25 years with support, advice and information on a number of issues including homelessness, sexual health, mental health, employment, education and relationships.

The sessions which are run all by volunteers, offer a safe space for young people to come and eat affordable food whilst having the opportunity to speak to someone, or just have somewhere warm and dry to go. The centre also supports young people with cooking lessons, cv support and a variety of workshops which help young people to achieve and move on in their lives.

A big part of the service is also the free counselling which is always running with a waiting list due to the demand. To give an idea of how much services cost, one session of counselling cost £30 to deliver, which is offered to young people for free!
