St Andrews to Manchester · 21 August 2019

We're dedicated to beating blood cancer. We fund research and support those affected. Since 1960, we've invested over £500 million in blood cancer research, transforming treatments and saving lives. The day we beat blood cancer is now in sight and our researchers are determined to finish the job.

Story

In March this year, mens 1st team striker, Charlie Andrews (Chazza) suffered a minor concussion after finding himself in the firing line of a clearance in a cup game against Bowhill in the Taylor Sullivan Cup. Alongside this, he had a few other symptoms, to which this incident was accredited. His condition persisted and so he didn't return to uni after spring break. Rather devastatingly, it transpired that his symptoms actually eluded to a far more serious issue, and Chaz was unfortunately diagnosed with Burkitt's lymphoma, an aggressive form of blood cancer. This dreadful news certainly came as a shock to everyone involved with the club, most so for Charlie himself. Since then, Chaz has been undergoing chemotherapy, and at the start of July we received the fantastic news that he is winning his fight against cancer!

On 21st August, 10 players and staff from the University of St Andrews football club will be cycling from St Andrews to Manchester to visit Charlie, whilst raising money for the charity Bloodwise. Bloodwise is an excellent UK based charity dedicated to funding research into all blood cancers including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, but also dedicated to offering information and support to blood cancer patients.

Taking place over 3 days this will be both a physical and mental challenge for the group taking part. With little or no cycling experience we will be cycling 90-115 miles a day, over 3 days in order to complete the 280 miles ride.
