Story
This is Sally's story......
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
A few weeks ago my family and I decided we needed to set ourselves a challenge to raise money for Dementia UK and more importantly, Admiral Nurses. I thought of a very difficult challenge, the Yorkshire Three Peaks. We soon got our family involved and we are walking it on 3rd September this year.
My grandad, who recently turned 80, has had dementia for approximately 6 years. He moved into a care home in August 2015. We all miss him very much but it was for the best. It was a very hard decision for my grandma to make when choosing the right care home. For a year or so, every Saturday, a carer would come and look after my grandad so grandma could have a rest. She also, in the last few months of grandad being at home, had a Dementia Friend who came weekly to just basically chat to my grandma.
What grandma needed though through all this was an Admiral Nurse. These are people who give practical, clinical and emotional support to families living with dementia to help them cope. Wakefield finally got an Admiral Nurse last June but unfortunately there is only one Admiral Nurse in our area. Thankfully Matthew, the only Admiral Nurse in Wakefield, helped my grandma in the last few months of my grandad being at home. He still stays in touch with my grandma and supports her through tough decisions concerning my grandad. However, one Admiral Nurse cannot help everyone in the Wakefield area.
We are trying to raise money for Dementia UK so they can get more people like Matthew. Please give what you can so we can make a change.
The above was written completely by my daughter Sally (age 13) - it tells such a small part of story......all I will say, which Sally doesn't mention, is how much support her and her sister Lucy have been to my mum over the past few years.
Matthew, & many Admiral Nurses, are completely self funded - we therefore need as much funds as possible to ensure he stays and hopefully raise enough to help fund more nurses like him.
