On June 9th 2013 I am trekking the GR20, a long distance trail that traverses Corsica diagonally from north to south.  I will be carrying all my gear and sleeping in a tent up in the mountains, taking 15 days to complete.  Of all the long distance trails in Europe, this is widely regarded as the toughest.  There will be intense heat, steep accents, thunderstorms, snow and constant rocky terrain for 200km.  The GR20 is an endurance challenge, used for training by the French foreign Legion, a physical challenge so difficult that only 1 in 4 people manage to complete it. 

I need your support.

My chosen charity is the Donkey Sanctuary.  As an artist who specializes in animal paintings I spend a huge amount of time with animals, and that is the most pleasurable part of my job.  I usually look for personality in my subjects to paint and I have found donkeys to have this in abundance; they are intelligent creatures with a strong bond once you get to know them.  

The donkey has been a working animal for thousands of years and is still widely used around the world by those living below subsistence levels.  Part of what the Donkey Sanctuary does is to help those donkeys and provide support to the owners so that they are treated well.  Donkeys are also kept as pets in more developed countries and unfortunately many are badly treated just as many pets are.  They are not cared for appropriately and are kept in poor conditions.  The Donkey Sanctuary often deals with these cases and nurtures them back to good health.

The Donkey Sanctuary is the worlds largest donkey and mule charity.

It has taken over 14,500 donkeys into its care and has over 45 welfare officers who can follow up reports of cruelty to or neglect of donkeys, quickly and efficiently. It also works throughout the world helping to improve conditions for working donkeys and mules.
