Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. In a bid to raise money for Alzheimer's Society, I am going to be climbing Ben Nevis under the cover of darkness - setting off at 10:30pm with the challenge of reaching the summit (4,409 feet above sea level) by sunrise.
There are 800,000 people with dementia in the UK with numbers set to rise to one million by 2021. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia; it is a physical disease which causes protein 'plaques' and 'tangles' to develop in the structure of the brain, leading to the death of brain cells. This causes loss of memory, mood changes, and problems with communication and reasoning. People with Alzheimer's also have a shortage of important chemicals in their brain which are involved with the transmission of messages. It is a progressive disease, which means that gradually, over time, more parts of the brain are damaged. As this happens, the symptoms become more severe.
Having experienced first-hand the affect that Alzheimer’s has on both those with the disease and their families, I am a real supporter of the work that this charity does. They touch the lives of over 30,000 people every week, providing practical services and support for people with dementia and their carers - with the ultimate aim of finding a cure for this terrible disease.
How will my donation help?
£5 could pay for one person to attend a half hour session at a monthly Dementia Café, providing information and support for people with dementia and their carers
£20 could pay for 100 copies of Understanding and respecting the person with dementia - one of the Society's most requested factsheets
£50 could fund a PhD researcher for one day to continue vital research into understanding the causes of dementia, how it can be treated and, ultimately, to find a cure
£120 could pay to run Talking Point for one day - the Society's 24/7 online community for all people affected by dementia
