2010 Berlin Marathon · 26 September 2010 ·

ME Research UK exists solely to fund high quality biomedical studies into ME/CFS. Our funded research suggests that in excess of 400,000 people in the UK have ME/CFS but it is neither well understood nor, in many cases, properly recognised. We invest in the best research we can globally.

Story

On 26th September I’m going to be attempting to run all 42.195km of the 37th Berlin Marathon.

This may seem like a bizarre decision given that I don’t particularly enjoy running, but there is some method to my madness...

Two ambitions for the day are

-          Get round the whole course without completely ruining my knees

-          Raise a decent amount of money for a really good cause

The charity I’ve chosen to run for is called ME Research UK who are charity with the principal aim of commissioning and funding scientific (biomedical) investigation into the causes, consequences and treatment of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (also known as ME/CFS). This is a debilitating illness which affects between 120,000 and 240,000 people in the UK, but which is not well understood nor, in many cases, properly recognised.  One of these people is my sister, Anna, who has suffered the consequences of ME since 2002.  She’s battled really hard with things and has taken great steps towards a recovery although progress is often slow and it can be endlessly frustrating that the medical profession has neither a well developed idea of the roots of the illness nor effective methods for combating the consequences or expediting the recovery.  I believe that extra funding and research in this area could result in an increased quality of life for a huge number of people – hence I chose this charity.

You can visit their website http://www.meresearch.org.uk  for further information.

It would be fantastic if you could offer your support for this worthy cause and make all my training and inevitable pain later this month worthwhile.

Many thanks,

Sam
