Story

I haven’t told many people about my story, how I dealt with it was to bottle it up and not make people aware of it, now right or wrong this was how I dealt with it.

In 2015 my partner Katie and I had the fantastic news any loving couple wants to hear, we were expecting our first baby.

As you can imagine we were over the moon, excited, nervous all the emotions you can think of we had!

Most of the pregnancy went smoothly, we had started making plans and getting things into place, we went off to our 2nd scan around 22 weeks. It was then we found out our whole world would change, excitement turn into fear and fear turned into sadness.

The scan had revealed our little boy had a heart condition called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome a condition that affects 4 in every 1000 births, this news hit us like a train, it put a huge weight over the pregnancy and changed our outlook on life forever.

The condition meant Arty had a severe under developed left part of his heart and meant that within the first month he would have needed heart surgeries with 90-95% chance of not making it.

After weeks of discussions with the doctors and specialists, and many conversations with ourselves, at 25 weeks Arty James Thatcher was born sleeping at 1:09am on 17 November at West Middlesex Hospital.

When he was born we were given this memory box from a charity called 4Louis, I had never heard of them before but when I opened this box it melted my heart and almost brought a sense of peace upon me. This box included among other things, a cast of Arty’s hand and foot prints which is priceless, a birth certificate, a little angel figure which sits in our lounge with a candle lit next to him. The one thing that gives me most comfort is the little teddy that was in the box, we decided that should go with Arty so when we said goodbye I knew he would always have his teddy to hold! Gives me peace every time I think about him.

This was all given to us by 4Louis and I am now running The Great North Run on Sunday 9th September not just for my little boy Arty but for all the Mummy and Daddies, Grandparents, Brothers, Sisters, families that go through and have been through what we have.

I am trying to raise as much money as possible so 4Louis can keep helping all the families that need it around the U.K.

Thank you for reading and thank you for any support you can give, even if you can’t sponsor sharing my story may help someone else in a similar position.
