Story
What are we doing? - On the 6 July 2018, Sam, Annalis, Kate, Mike, Ben, Tomasz and Toto will be climbing the 'Mountain of Heaven' Ben Nevis. Ben Nevis is the highest point in Scotland and the British Isles, standing at the lofty height of 1343m (roughly 4,000ft).
We set off just after sunset, approx.10:30pm and hope to reach the summit to see the sunrise and the wonderful views over Glen Nevis, Loch Linnhe and Loch Eil, as well as the ruins of the observatory at the top of the mountain. At that moment, we will be the highest people in Britain!
Who are we doing it for? – For those we have loved and lost, for those still fighting and for everyone affected by Alzheimer’s or Dementia.
Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia. There is currently no cure for Alzheimer's disease. There are more than 520,000 people in the UK with Alzheimer's disease. The disease mainly affects people over 65. Above this age, a person's risk of developing Alzheimer's disease doubles approximately every five years. One in six people over 80 have dementia. In the UK there are over 40,000 people under the age of 65 with dementia.
The word dementia describes a set of symptoms that can include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. These symptoms occur when the brain is damaged by certain diseases, including Alzheimer's disease.
Alzheimer's is a progressive disease. This means that gradually, over time, more parts of the brain are damaged. As this happens, more symptoms develop. They also become more severe.
