Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I was initially scheduled to complete this trek in 2020 but COVID19 shut the world down and there has been a delay.
I am climbing to 17,600 feet on the world's highest mountain, Mount Everest. This is a personal challenge for me and I wanted to support a charity and raise some funds whist I do this.
I set off in October 2022 to Kathmandu and I stay in Nepal for three weeks. I am following in the footsteps of my mother who did the same trek 20 years ago.
I will be spending the next few months fundraising and training to support the wonderful generosity of BRACE who support the research into dementia in the South West and Wales.
Every 3 seconds someone, globally, will be diagnosed with dementia. Alzheimer's is the most major form of dementia, which is an umbrella term for all neuro-degenerative disorders.
The work of BRACE is to support the clever scientists in their endeavours to learn more about this tragic and degenerative disease, getting dementia is not just about getting older and is not a normal part of ageing.
It is a physiological disease that the South West Dementia Brain Bank, who are solely funded by BRACE work to identify the parts of the brain that are literally carved out by the disease and they seek to find new treatments and clinical applications to help assuage sufferers and to make early identification of the disease. This means establishing new diagnostic testing.
Currently diagnosis is difficult and expensive and invasive - BRACE are fundraising to find new ways to do this.
The South West Dementia Brain Bank are part of a global network of specialists who share their knowledge with their clever counterparts in other parts of the world. Brain tissue is harvested, from those who have donated their brains to medical research and sometimes tissue is sent as far away as Australia so that results and clinical tests can be compared.
In 2018 BRACE gave £280,765 to the South West Dementia Brain Bank.
£89,622 to Plymouth University for research.
£87,800 to Swansea University for research.
£15,874 to Swansea University for equipment.
£26,805 to University of Bristol for research.
BRACE would like to extend a big thank you to all their supporters for helping them achieve record income in 2018 and this has enabled them to donate over £500,000 in grants for this vital research.
Thank you for reading this far and if you would like to know more please go to www.alzheimers-brace.org
