Campaign by St Mary's Church, Diss (RCN 1134118)
It costs us over £8,000 a month to look after this beautiful 13th century church and provide services for our community. We normally offer 3 services every Sunday (with a choir at two of these) plus a selection of other services during the week.

Story

Samuel will be walking from and through the Diss Team Ministry where he serves as Curate to the Cathedral Church of Norwich - a distance of some 27 miles - in order to raise money for the Diss Team Ministry and to pray for both the Team and any supporters of the Pilgrimage. Along the way he will be joined by the Bishop of Norwich before being recieved by the Cathedral.

Through the last years of lockdowns I, like many others, have come to find the ritual of a daily walk something which has granted solace in these most unusual times. The rhythmic plodding of feet on countryside footpaths, the sense of being able to breathe - both physically, mentally, and spiritually - and the opportunity to process my thoughts and to bring my concerns to God in prayer has been invaluable.

As I've wandered through the countryside the urge to do a longer, more significant walk has grown and, in time, given rise to the desire for this Pilgrimage from St Mary's Diss in the DIss Team Ministry, where I serve as Curate, to the Cathedral Church of Norwich where I was ordained both Deacon and Priest - a journey of some 27 miles.

Naturally the lockdowns have impacted the financial health of our team of Eleven Churches here in the Diss Team Ministry. As such I'm keen to use this walk not just to pray for our Team but also to help raise funds for the Diss Team Ministry.

On the 9th of June I will begin my pilgrimage with Morning Prayer at St Mary's, Diss at 7am. I shall then set off on the way. The journey will go via a good number of Churches, starting with the Churches of Burston, Gissing, and Tivetshall - Churches in our Team Ministry which are en route to Norwich before eventually arriving at the Cathedral.

In preparation I have done a number of 15, 18 and 20 mile walks. I estimate that the full journey will take between 8 and 9 hours of walking, with a handful of rest stops at different Churches along the way.

I will carry with me a notebook with the names of those who have donated to support this prilgrimage or requested prayer (you don't have to donate to request prayer - just contact Samuel with your intention).

If you are willing to support this Pilgrimage Walk please do give generously to support the work of the Diss Team Ministry.

With every blessing,
Reverend Samuel S. Thorp

Curate in the Diss Team Ministry.
