I began fund raising for the BUTTERFLY HOSPICE TRUST (Boston) after my 23-year-old son Nick died of aggressive kidney cancer. Having seen the difference between inadequate care and pain control in the home, on a hospital ward and in excellent pain control and care in a hospice I had no hesitation when Nick made me promise to fight to improve care locally and in particular to fight for the needs of younger patients.
Currently our nearest hospice is in Lincoln. The environment there was so different from the local hospital and when Nick was admitted - his pain was quickly controlled. The downside was the daily 86 mile round trip from home to Hospice. I spoke to many visitors there from this area, who ,because they had young children, were unable to visit loved ones very often.
Nick died on a hospital ward as there was no bed available for him in the hospice when he needed it:but having seen both types of care – I have NO doubt that Hospices offer a total package for mental as well as physical needs for patients and carers. Most people would opt to end their days at home - BUT the reality is that complete pain management cannot always be undertaken at home .
