Adam's story, and why we are supporting Sands
Sands is a charity very close to our hearts. For those that do not know us, we lost our son Adam in February 2009. I was nearly eight months pregnant with him and everything was great. One night, I noticed he was moving less, and the following morning, did not feel him at all. I went to see the midwife that day who could not detect his heartbeat. I was sent to hospital for a scan, and was then told that he had died. I was given medication to induce the labour - I still had to go home pregnant, and basically had to wait to go into labour - this took another two days. To those who have been through this, it is the worst thing ever to be pregnant knowing your baby is dead. Adam was finally born naturally two days later. I did not know what to expect seeing him, but he was just a baby like any other - perfectly formed, just with his eyes closed. He was born at 9.00 at night, myself and my husband kept him with us that night. I still expected him to just wake up, it was only in the early hours of the next morning that I realised he was not going to, and just broke down. We stayed with him in the hospital the next morning and had him christened. We handed him to the midwives that afternoon after saying our goodbyes, leaving him with a blue bear that his Dad bought from the hospital shop. Letting him go was the hardest and most painful thing I have ever done, It felt like my limbs had been ripped off. That was only the beginning. Having to bury him, and then look after our daughter when I wanted to just waste away in a corner. Then having to deal with the empty baby room and things we had bought.
Looking back now, I can say that time is a healer. We now have another son, Benjamin who I feel blessed to have. However, Adam still passes my thoughts everyday - I am just grateful that I did get time to meet him, and that is what has helped me move on.
Sands helped us to do this. Stillbirths are not as uncommon as people think. The UK has one of the worst rates for developed countries - 17 babies are stillborn, or die shortly after birth every day. Pregnancy is a miracle, and I accept that at times, there is sadly nothing that can be done to save a baby. However, I never had a reason why we lost Adam and will never know. This is the case for many other parents, and many of these deaths can be prevented with improved ante natal care and screening techniques. I believe it would have saved Adam. This is what Sands are campaigning for, and the support they give parents at these difficult times is crucial.
I found it very difficult to write this, but wanted to, as I feel people need to understand how traumatic a time this is. 17 babies a day is unacceptable. If medical improvements could save just one of these babies, then surely it is worth it. So please, show your support. We have called the album "Angels in our Hearts," as these precious babies are angels who will never leave our hearts. The music night will be a tribute to these precious babies, and will be an enjoyable night! Come along! So please, I ask one last time - whether you purchase the album, come to the night, or just donate to this site, please help us to get this number of babies down. Thank you very much.
