Story
Before Christmas, I was thinking about how I might like to mark my upcoming “big” birthday and decided it was about time I walked the Cornish section of the South West Coast Path - my back yard - and something I’d been wanting to do for a very long time. One go. 280 miles. 28 days (hopefully!). Camping en route, stopping when my bones have had enough each day. Taking in the glorious scenery and the certain wet and wind.
One thing I hadn’t counted on was the outpouring of “oh, I’d love to do that” followed by “but will you be safe?” This worry didn’t only relate to coastal erosion. The spotlight has, once again, recently fallen upon women’s safety and their right to be able to go out and walk where they like, when they like, without fear. I am truly blessed to have friends who are concerned for my wellbeing and that got me thinking about whether or not I should give up my dream; because the truth is, the scariest predators in the UK are not our wildlife species but other humans.
So, I have decided to dedicate this walk (which will take place during May/June 2021) to The Women’s Centre Cornwall, who themselves support our local women and girls who have experienced abuse; helping them to address the impacts and empowering them to reclaim the life they want and deserve.
If you are able to give any amount, no matter how small, that would be amazing! And should any campsites wish to waive their fee (or anyone living on/very near to the path allow me to pitch my tent in their garden!) I will be donating the “saving” to this fundraiser.
