Santa in the City 2017 · 6 December 2017 ·
It's that time of year again! Time for my (Poppy) annual run of the year with Kath pretty much breezing by me.
We still HATE running! The monotonous movements, the impact on your joints, the wind in your face, the bugs up your nose, the looks from normal pedestrians, the embarrassment when you stumble and particularly that sore feeling in the back of your throat.
So, why on earth did we sign up to run a 5k?
Poppy joined South London Cares last year (if you don't know what they do please check out their website and sign up, there's one for North London too!). The induction was an emotional experience, particularly when they told us about Richard. He's in his 90s and has severe arthritis which means he needs a stick to walk, but he was desperate to help SLC fundraise and join the volunteers on a 5k run. The SLC team didn't think this was such a good idea, given his health, but he was determined.
And so, he walked, shuffled and hobbled his way through a WHOLE 5K. He had a great crowd around him cheering him on, and it looked like he enjoyed himself. Richard also raised thousands of pounds for the charity. What a guy!
This story made our chests ache. So we're back for our second go at Santa in the City.
Bring on the busy streets, itchy costumes and sweaty brows.
And, if you dare, please do join us!
