Great North Run 2017 · 10 September 2017 ·

We work with those in recovery from all addictions and partner with other organisations. A safe space to connect with others, take part in groups and events and connect with the wider recovery community. Embracing people where they are, as well as encouraging them to realise their potential.

Story

I have done a few events and not asked for sponsorship but this is so important to me so I'm begging! I am doing the great north run but I also wanted to really push myself so I'm also doing my first (and absolutely last) marathon the following month.

I am raising money for the Road to Recovery Trust. The trust supports George St Social which is a safe place where people come together to maintain their recovery. Addiction is not a condition which is magically cured, the underlying issues don't miraculously disappear and while time can make life easier the journey isn't always straightforward. George St hosts a massive range of fellowship meetings but it is so much more than that. The cake from the cafe is bloody lovely for a start! The space is so important; for yoga, for singing, for watching the match, for playing pool but must mostly for knowing you are never alone. Recovery works when people connect. Recovery works when we don't feel judged, when we feel loved and accepted and free and in turn we love, accept and offer hope to those who need it. My journey has not been easy. I have not been easy to love but despite all the selfish things I've done I was never turned away. That is why I want to raise money for this fabulous place. It really does save lives.
