There are lots of different parts of the respiratory system which allow the lungs to function normally - the airways, the lung tissue, the lung lining and the muscles that move the chest as we breathe. Wythenshawe Hospital (University Hospital of South Manchester) is the regional centre in the north west offering specialist care to patients with lung disease.
One way of diagnosing disorders of the lung lining is to use an ultrasound scanner - the same kind of scan that women have in pregnancy. This can show abnormal findings like fluid around the lung which might be caused by infection or heart problems - or even something more serious like a cancer.
There is never a long wait for people to have a scan but sometimes the scanner is needed in 2 places at once, which means a person might have to stay in hospital for their test a bit longer or come back another day. Raising money for another scanner would mean that patients' ultrasound scans could be done quicker and services could be expanded to provide even better care than is currently offered!
Almost everyone knows somebody who has been affected by lung problems - a new scanner might help a friend or relative of yours to be treated more quickly or get back home to you sooner. We would be really grateful for your support!
