The Wildlife Trust of South & West Wales is one of 46 Wildlife Trusts across the UK. We cover an area of 9,787 km² in South & West Wales - including around half of Wales’ coastline! We own & manage 110 nature reserves, including Skomer & Skokholm island. We have 800 volunteers & over 10,000 members!

Story

Wildlife and the natural environment is in crisis - far more species are declining than increasing in the UK and we are losing precious habitats too - for example, 97% of our wildflower meadows have gone.

The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales is working to save wildlife - all species and habitats, on land and at sea.  I work for this charity and we are proud of the fact that we keep our running costs low so that as much of our income as possible is spent directly on conservation of habitats and species.  We are passionate about nature and want to pass that passion onto other, working to reconnect people with their natural environment.

We don't receive core funding from the government or any government agencies, and rely on membership subscriptions, legacies, donations and grants, as well as modest earned income.  I wanted to do something to support my charity's work for wildlife.

I recently joined the crew of a Celtic longboat and we decided to enter the Great River Race up the Thames in London.  I am not super-fit or super sporty, I am your run-of-the-mill exhausted working mother who is trying her best, so the challenge is very daunting.  We generally row along a quiet river and estuary, watched by Oystercatchers, a Seal, sheep and a few sailors, so racing along the Thames through London will be a culture shock and we are all nervous about it.  So to give myself the push I need (or just to add a bit more pressure) I thought I could combine this with raising money for a cause that is dear to me.
