Story

I am entering the 1K race for parallel London, with my family, as I want to raise money to help a charity that has made a huge difference to me as a disabled person. I'm completely blind and also have mobility problems so walking is hard for me and I normally travel around outdoors in a wheelchair. But I have been in training over the past year and I am really looking forward to attempting to walk the full 1 km, guided by my husband Graham and little boy Evan. Parallel London is a wonderful inclusive race/walk/push event which encourages everybody to get out and involved, whether disabled or able-bodied.

I needed help when I came home from hospital four years ago to get back into using technology. I thought it was going to be impossible for me to use my computer or phone as a completely blind person but with the support of U Can Do IT a whole world was opened up to me again. The charity works with over 90 different types of disabilities and the tutor comes to your home for a 10 week course which is designed specifically for your needs. I was paired with a visually impaired tutor who gave me so much confidence about using technology independently and I continued to learn and practice after it finished. Last year I was asked to contribute to you can do IT's blog and in March this year I started working at their head office in Ballan as a volunteer, working on a social impact study. I really enjoy the work I do with them and am taking part in this fundraising event to enable them to help more people get the training they need.
I really hope that I can get round the course on my feet so please lend your support and encouragement by sponsoring me!
