Since 1969 CPU London has been offering individual and group psychoanalytic psychotherapy to anybody who is concerned about their emotional difficulties and is seeking psychotherapy or looking for advice about which kind of psychological help would be best for them.

I have been working as an Honorary Psychotherapist at the Camden Psychotherapy Unit (CPU) for about a year and a half.  CPU does vital work through the commitment of some highly trained and impressive colleagues and a number of volunteers (including myself).

CPU was established in 1969 as a specialist service in the provision of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. CPU has been an independent charity since 2005.

For 42 years, CPU was able to offer free psychotherapy to all due to financial support from the local government and the NHS. However, as the NHS decided to invest in more short-term psychological support, it withdrew funding from CPU.

This resulted in the CPU having to fundraise to secure its future so that it can continue to make psychotherapy accessible to everyone who needs it.  Although it still offers free psychoanalytic psychotherapy to adults who cannot afford to pay, it now charges fees on a sliding scale according to people’s income and personal circumstances.

All of us who work at CPU are committed to keeping the service open. It would be great if we weren’t constantly worrying about the organisation’s on-going viability.  By running for CPU, I’m wanting to raise awareness about it’s work as well as money for us to carry on delivering the invaluable services we offer.
