Chloes PAH story...to help raise awareness for the terrible condition that is Pulmonary Hypertension:
Chloe was 4 years old when what was to be the first symptom of Pulmonary Hypertension Showed its face. She had Passed out at nursery in August 07.
She found it very difficult to walk anywhere and always complained of being out of breath.
When she started school in the September 07 she couldnt even walk from the car to the school gates without crying with being short of breath and of pains in her leg.
We took her to the doctor who diagnosed Asthma, she was prescribed an inhaler but it made no difference...if anything she got worse and this is when the blue lips started.
They started maybe 3 times a week and as it was winter just assossiated it with the cold- the Doctors all listened to her heart and confirmed it 'sounded' fine.
Then on the 26th March 2008, we were collecting her from school and she looked like she had been sucking on a dark blue felt tip pen, her cheeks were also a deep purple- so we thought enough is enough and took her straight to the doctor. He sent her for an "MOT" at the Local hospital which involved an ECG....the ECG came back with a slight abnormality but we were told its probably nothing. so they Hooked her up to an Echocardiogram to get a better look at the heart.
What we and the consultant saw was harrowing to say the least -there was our daughters extremely tired and grossly enlarged heart barely able to function, fighting to keep her alive.
It would be this day 27.03.08 that we would be told the devasting news that our child had a rare and life threatening condition called Primary Pulmonary Hypertension.
Chloe was Transfered to the Brompton Hospital on her 5th Birthday 28th March where all our worse fears were confirmed.
We were told chloe wouldnt live to see her 13th birthday...and that was best case scenario.
To say we were devasted is an understatement- i completely lost control in the hospital- i felt like my heart had been torn out and stamped on. We found it very hard to stay strong for chloes sake. But had to!!
The year to follow first diagnosis was a traumatising and bumpy road with spending more time in hospital than out, in June 08 (just 3months after diagnosis) Great ormond street decided Chloe would have to have a hickman line fitted for 24hr Intravenous Epoprostenol Therapy.
Chloe can no longer do her favourite hobbies like swimming and has to have myself or Darren with her at all times to troubleshoot the pump that keeps her alive..
We have met the Transplant team this year (April) and it was an eye opening week of mixed emotions. We now hope that chloe will be a long time away from needing a Transplant, instead of the 2 years they have told us due to her aggressive and unpredictable condition.
Ideopathic Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension is a cruel disease that can be kept under control with early Diagnosis.
We are very lucky and extremely Grateful to have Chloe with us today, but it still haunts me that had she been diagnosed earlier and the signs were recognised that summer of her fainting then maybe it wouldnt have encrouched on her little life as much as it has.
Although Chloe is aware she is very sick, she does not fully know the full detrimental affect this disease will have on her life.
This Disease needs to be made more aware so that children and adults can be diagnosed early and before its too late.
Chloe is currently recieving massive Vasodilaters to ease the strain on her heart, these include Sildenafil, amlodipine, Bosentan and Intravenous Epoprostenol....
