Channel Swim Relay September 2016 - Clown Fish Team · 1 September 2016

Every two hours someone in the UK is paralysed by a spinal cord injury. It can happen to anyone at any time and no one is prepared for how it will change their life. Aspire is a national charity that provides practical help, supporting spinal cord injured people from injury to independence.

Story

Thanks for visiting my JustGiving page.  I think this is my midlife crisis!

So, on or around 1st September 2016 - depending on the tides - myself and five other swimmers will brave the English Channel and swim from Dover to France, taking it in turns to each swim for one hour each until we get there.

I've swum in open water before but not like this.  Firstly, landlocked Stratford doesn't pose many options for practising swimming in the sea!  Secondly, there is so much other traffic in the Channel - jelly fish, cross channel ferries and lots of other stuff I'd rather not think about.  And thirdly (this list is perhaps not exhaustive!), I can't wear a wetsuit and it will be very cold!!

The charity I am swimming for is called Aspire.  It is a superb charity that helps people from spinal injury to independence.  Their centre in Stanmore in Middlesex is brilliant, and offers so much more than just swimming rehabilitation to those that need it - wheelchair basketball and gym sessions, for example.  The staff and people I've met there are inspiring.

I can't wait for my challenge and keeping me going throughout my training and the swim itself, will be the thoughts of the money I'm hoping to raise.

I thank you :)
