Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My niece Katie was diagnosed with RETTS at 4 years old, she was showing signs of development delay and lost a few abilities (like some speech and counting etc).  She has been lucky enough to continue waling but has started to struggle more with mobility as she has got got older.  Katie is a very happy little girl, who despite all of her issues loves to be around family and friends.

RETT Syndrome is a neurological condition which most of strikes previously healthy girls between their first and second birthday, leaving them with multiple disabilities and medial complexities for life.  Between the ages of one and four, a child with Rett Syndrome will lose some of their abilities.  The child will gradually or suddenly start to develop severe problems with communication, language, memory, hand use, mobility, coordination and other brain functions.  Symptoms include:- Loss of purposeful hand use -  Repetitive hand movements, including wringing, washing, clapping or tapping - Periods of distress, irritability, agitation, screaming for no obvious reason - Loss of interest in people and avoiding eye contact - Unsteady or awkward walking patter - Difficulty sleeping - Difficulty chewing and swallowing typical size/texture food for their age - Constipation, causing stomach aches and distress - Slowing of head growth compare to typical peers.

Reverse Rett is a charity that believes we will one day have a cure for Rett Syndrome  They were successful in the reversal of Rett Syndrome in the lab in 2007.  They entered a new era for research in which they knew a cure was possible.  Over the last decade, they have invested in high quality research projects such as the RSRT gene therapy and Mecp2 Consortia which have delivered viable potential treatments to industry for development into human clinical trials.
