We are running to raise awareness and funds for Children and War UK, a charity dedicated to improving the lives of children and young people affected by conflict, war or other disasters.
*Updated Event: Battersea Half Marathon Saturday 11th March 2023.
My Connection
I came across Children and War UK in 2015 while working with refugee minors and families in asylum centres in Norway and camps in Greece following the Syrian refugee crisis. Over half of the individuals fleeing their homes to reach the European shores were children and young people. They are the most vulnerable victims of war and conflict and their experiences may have severe and lasting effects on their health, development and futures.
During my studies, I had the opportunity to develop a research project to evaluate psychological support for young refugees settled in London, alongside founding member and dear friend, Professor William Yule at King’s College London. He is one of the extraordinary individuals who have over decades worked relentlessly to improve our understanding of and ability to best support children and young people through clinical work, research and charity efforts.
With wars and conflicts still ongoing, it is critical to provide psychological support at an early stage to help reduce the long-term effects of these events on young lives.
The work of Children and War UK:
• The charity has supported the development of evidence-based manuals with coping strategies to build resilience and improve psychological wellbeing.
• Their aim is to provide early intervention by training local adults to help large groups of children in affected communities with the first steps towards recovering from trauma, in countries such as Palestine, Syria and Nepal, and more recently in Ukraine.
• Training is offered both online and in person, and trainees can cascade it to other adults in the community to reach many children and young people as early as possible.
• The charity also promotes and supports research focusing on the effects and consequences of traumatic events on children and their families.
I am also grateful that their work has motivated Fred to participate in the run and support the fundraising goal – this is our first half marathon and we are excited to take on the 21km challenge for this good cause!
Any donations are much appreciated and will support the continued work of this important charity.
Thank you so much in advance,
Sara & Fred
