On 17th September, 8 guys from the same family, with varying levels of fitness, will be taking on the challenge of the Richmond Half Marathon. The family has come together to raise funds and awareness for a disease called Sarcoma.
In March 2016 our Aunty Sharon was struck by this rare form of cancer. Sarcomas are rare cancers that develop in the muscles, bone, nerves, cartilage, tendons, blood vessels, and fatty & fibrous tissues. Sharon was a fun loving and caring person, who spent much of her time thinking of others. We will remember her as the aunty who always arrived bearing gifts and an endless supply of delicious homemade cakes.
Sadly after 15 months of bravely facing up to this cruel disease, Sharon passed away on the 27th June 2017. Sharon was 59 and leaves a devoted husband, three children and two grandchildren. She will be sorely missed by all those who were fortunate to have known and loved her. Sharon's greatest gift was herself, as she remembered each one of us from childhood through to adulthood; now is our turn to remember her.
In Sharon's memory, we're raising money for Sarcoma UK, which highlights awareness and funds research into battling this rare disease. Sarcoma is one of the hardest cancers to diagnose. People visit their GP more times than those with any other form of cancer, before being diagnosed with Sarcoma. It is usually the size of a baked bean tin by the time of diagnosis, but if it's caught when it's smaller than a golf ball, the chances of survival increases by 20%. Sarcoma UK provides, among other things, the training and education for GP's to be able to catch it earlier. If you feel that you can support us in any way, be it donating or raising money/awareness yourself, we would appreciate it immensely.
If you're free on Sept. 17th, come down and cheer us on! Here's the course map: https://richmond-running-festival.s3.amazonaws.com/uploader/files/RRF-HM-Course-Map_2016_06.pdf
Thanks for reading this and supporting us on our run! Wish us luck, we'll need it...
