Story
On the 23rd April 2023 I will be running the London Marathon for Liberty’s Legacy, a special fund of the Bone Cancer Research Trust, set up in memory of Liberty Grace Schurer.
I met Liberty’s sister, Liv, 4 years ago on my first day at university and ever since then she has been one of my closest friends. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Libs, I have heard so many lovely stories and memories about her. She always radiated a positive energy and this is something I aim to carry with me throughout the hardest days of my marathon training.
Libs was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma, a rare but aggressive form of primary bone cancer on her 13th birthday in September 2016. She very sadly gained her wings on 11th October 2017, just 2 weeks after celebrating her 14th birthday, a day that she was so determined to make. She is so very deeply missed, but she taught those around her so much during her 13-month battle with her courage, bravery, dignity, humour and thoughtfulness and she continues to inspire and touch people's hearts every single day.
Unfortunately, treatments for Ewing’s have not improved in over 40 years and there remains a lack of funding and research into all primary bone cancers. Vital funds are desperately needed for new life saving research into Ewings Sarcoma to help children and others like Liberty, as was her wish and I’m honoured to be able to do my part in helping raise awareness and funds.
