Chai came into Gwent Cats Protection from a multicat household in Newport. She was one of four kittens we took in. She is very affectionate and playful.

At her first check up, a chest abnormality was picked up and she was then seen by Russell Chandler BVSc CertSAO MSci(OrthEng) MRCVS - the orthopaedic specialist and practice owner at Alphavet. 

Although we have seen one similar case before, Chai has a fairly unusual condition called Pectus Excavatum. This basically means that her sternum (Breast bone) is curved upwards instead of being flat. This is crushing her lungs and causing breathing difficulties. If left untreated Chai will not survive long as there is not enough space in her chest cavity for her growing vital organs.

Chai's siblings have grown and progressed normally and have now found their forever homes. We desperately want to give Chai this chance too. She faces a very complex major operation. It will involve breaking / bending and potentially pinning her sternum to make room in her chest cavity for her organs to develop. She will then have at least 6 weeks cage rest to heal and after further recouperation time she should live a normal life.

Chai is now old enough to have the surgery and we are appealing for donations to pay for this life saving operation.

The estimated total is £2500, this will include the operation, hospitalisation and follow up medications and consultations. 

Any monies received in excess of our target for Chai's operation will be used to treat and feed other cats and kittens in Gwent Cat Protection care.
