Story
Poipet Cambodia is a town of over 100,000 people. I visited in March 2009. I spent a morning at the Center for Disease Control with around 85 Aids patients who were being administered ARV's.
One of the staff informed me that this year and next, 30 babies will be born to mothers who are HIV+ or are suffering with AIDS.
He informed me that if these babies are breast fed the chance of them surviving HIV free decreases from 98% (if fed formula milk) to between 20% and 45%.
The Center provides water filters to ensure that clean water is used for cleaning the bottle and making the formula so the risk of infection from contaminated water is low. If the women are not supplied with formula milk their only option is to feed their babies water or sweetened milk. This leads to an increased level of malnutrition and adds to the already high mortality rate of infants under 5 in Cambodia.
Formula milk to save these babies lives is around £40 a child.
To put this in context. Poipet is similar in size to York, where I live. I reckon if we thought this was even a risk in York then the money for milk would appear within a day.
This is happening in Poipet, we need the money fast. Please think about how you can help us to raise the money. We're not doing any gimmicks or fundraisers yet, just relying on your generosity,
Thanks so much.
