Story

This is an opportunity for us as the A-Team (#SAwingdoingtherightthing) to have a social impact through giving, volunteering and taking positive actions. Running is better together, too!

We are running in the Great Bristol Run on 14 May in support of Baby Bank Network Bristol. For this event, I have decided that I (together with Raquel, Lloyd and James) would run and raise funds for Baby Bank Network Bristol as it is a great way to get fit, stay healthy whilst supporting Baby Bank work helping local families with essential items for their children.

But why?

A few years after travelling to Zambia (teaching for a couple of weeks in local school) I was appointed in 2016 as a school governor at Bishop Road Primary School. As a chair of the Finance/Building and Health & Safety committee I have learnt more about the School funding arrangement over the years. I am also lucky to sit at the Bristol School Forum, our statutory body comprising headteachers and governors from Bristol where I represent primary schools across the city.

This has been an opportunity not only for me to gain a more detailed understanding of funding allocations but also to contribute to the consultation and decision making process that ultimately impact on all our schools. It is a difficult time for all public bodies, funding is only going to get tighter and decisions more difficult.

The needs of young children are getting more and more complex and helping local families with essential items for their children, as Baby Bank does, is an important and vital activity. Plenty of reading out there…poverty has negative impacts on children social & emotional development but also on behavioural and educational outcome!

Let’s have an impact on our local community and go for a run; as a team is always more fun!

Working with local referral partners, Baby Bank Network Bristol redistributes pre-loved items for babies and children to families in need across Bristol and the surrounding area. They also give out some new items such as toiletries, nappies and cot mattresses. Baby Bank Network helps ensure families have the essentials they need for their new baby or young children, and this can help lower parents anxiety and improve their mental well-being at what can be a stressful time.
