HELP US RAISE FUNDS FOR DA'ARO YOUTH PROJECT AND LONDON YOUTH ROWING
With seven of my colleagues from School Food Matters, we're taking part in Race The Thames Virtual 2022. Race The Thames is the annual fundraising event run by London Youth Rowing (LYR).
From 24 January over seven days, our team of eight will run or row the equivalent of the length of the Thames, 346km; so approximately 6.2km each day per person.
50% of the money raised will be used to help support LYR projects in London and Leeds. LYR's programmes allow young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to take part in rowing, giving them the benefit of participating in the sport and allowing them to fulfil their potential.
The other 50% will go to Da'aro Youth Project, established in 2018 by members of the Eritrean community in London in response to the deaths of a number of teenage Eritreans by suicide. They work to support young people arriving in the UK alone from the Horn of Africa (Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan and Somalia). Their project Injera Club, a weekly youth club in Streatham, is a fun and lively space where young Eritrean, Ethiopian, Somali and Sudanese children and young people can relax, play games, socialise and eat homely food. From this space, they work with young people to identify if they have support needs and respond to these accordingly. Integral to all this work is the focus on advocacy and enabling young people to advocate for themselves to make changes.
