I'm taking on the Great North Run 2019 to support families facing dementia across the UK. Dementia UK provide specialist dementia nurses who provide dementia care to families in need, enabling them to live more positively with dementia.
Welcome to my fundraising page, I would be very grateful if you could take the time to have a read...
So why Dementia UK? There are a couple of reasons really, one being that in previous work roles I have supported individuals who suffer from dementia and have witnessed first hand the impact it can have on the day-to-day lives of these individuals
The other being that, although I am fortunate enough to not have any relatives who have been diagnosed with dementia, I do have friends whose relatives have and through these friends it becomes apparent the impact that dementia can also have on the friends/loved ones etc of those individuals.
There is one particular story that stands out from the crowd and its relevant to a couple of friends, Ash and Ad. Their mother, Linda, has a dementia diagnosis, Vascular Dementia to be exact. As I have mentioned previously, I have supported individuals with Dementia, and therefore I have a good level of knowledge, and yet it still seems inconceivable that a middle-aged lady (just 56 at the time of diagnosis) can be struck with such bad luck, especially when anyone who knows the family would surely agree that they had already suffered more than their share of bad luck. And yet it struck me, that although whilst going through both the day-to-day living of Dementia and/or supporting someone with Dementia, I have not once heard them complain. More embarrassingly for me, even knowing what they are going through and whilst calling myself their 'friend', it struck me one day that I rarely ask how they're all getting on, it's almost like I just expected them all to be okay. And that's when I decided to complete this years run for Dementia UK. So Ash, Ad and Linda this is for you. (I'm hoping to get the final donation made it Linda's name, rather than my own but need to discuss how I go about this with the charity)
Please give what you can, no matter how big/small. Dementia UK will be there and support families facing dementia and enable them to live more positively... even when friends are unintentionally ignorant to what is happening around them.
Thank You,
Scott
