Three years ago in July my sister, Jane, finally succumbed to cancer aged just 30. It ended a brave 11-year battle against the disease that began when sinovial sarcoma, a rare soft-tissue cancer, was diagnosed at the beginning of 1998. 

After a major op to remove part of a muscle in her back, the site of the original cancer and a course of radiotherapy, Jane's condition went into remission and a normal life beckoned. In 2004, however, six months after giving birth to her daughter, Lily, Jane discovered a lump under her arm. The cancer had returned, this time to her ribs.

Another major operation was necessary and chemotherapy followed. Jane also took part in a clinical trial of a new drug when the cancer later spread to her lungs. 

My sister gave it everything to try to beat her cancer -  doing her best to build her career, as well as being a mum and wife. Despite being exhausted by her condition a lot of the time she never once complained. She was the bravest person I've known. 

Throughout her treatment during the times she felt strong enough Jane was keen to provide support for other sarcoma sufferers through sharing her experiences at her regional Sarcoma UK group.
