How the Scottish Design Exchange can play its part in supporting the most vulnerable

As circumstances have forced an indefinite delay on a partnership between the Scottish Design Exchange artists and YMCA Edinburgh, which will see artists nurture the creativity, talents, and a sense of possibility for local children through a series of free art workshops.

This has had to be put on hold for now. But all is not lost, at a time of
extreme hardship for the children and their mums in one of the most
poverty-stricken areas of the city, the Scottish Design Exchange wants to step in and support the efforts of Mike Kerracher and his small team at the YMCA Edinburgh by holding an online prize draw, where you have the chance to win a fantastic range of prizes, kindly donated from our wonderful artists, to help raise money for the YMCA Edinburgh to continue their work within the Leith community in Edinburgh.

How the YMCA is responding

The telephone is of a vital lifeline and Mike and his team are using it to help keep spirits up. Street Soccer Scotland, who have funding to prepare and deliver food, have stepped in to make home deliveries each Tuesday and Fridays. “We are sending out activities and resources to help people cope during this period of isolation. But we are getting more and more pleas for things like nappies and baby milk. With Street Soccer Scotland delivering food each Tuesday and Friday, we have an opportunity to add some of these vital supplies to the deliveries.”

The littlest things can make a world of difference

“We would love to be able to send to mums a birthday cake for their child, even a card – just to acknowledge those key events in their lives. Sometimes it just the small things that make the biggest difference to morale. What other activity resources can we provide? There is much we would love to do. Contrary to belief, not all our families have access to the internet or even know how to use it to best effect. Digital exclusion adds to the strain and denies people access to the information and resources most of us take for granted. We would love to be able to bridge that gap. For now, though it is those vital supplies we need to
fund.

The partnership with SDX is one we are so excited by. The impact on the
children of working with some of the most talented artists, designers and craftspeople in Scotland will be incalculable. We cannot wait for that to kick in. Meanwhile, we have to deal with the impact on people, already fragile, of the Coronavirus. When Lynzi suggested that SDX might be able to add support, to help fundraise during this challenging time, I was more than delighted. I can promise you this. Each penny you gift us will make a difference to someone’s life.”

100% of the funds raised will go directly to the YMCA Edinburgh to be used to help support the children and families they work within the Leith Community, to help mitigate the impact of Covid-19.

The Prize Draw

As we have had such an overwhelming response from our artists donating everything from original artwork, jewellery, prints, and skincare sets, we will hold a prize draw every Friday afternoon, for 10 fantastic prizes each week, until all the prizes have been given out. We currently have 60 prizes and more coming in each day. We
will then start a new prize draw with 10 more new prizes, the following Monday morning, with details of the prizes posted throughout that week.

Each prize will have a different winner so that's 10 chances to win each week and if you want to re-enter the new prize draw the following week, you can have the chance to win one of 10 more!
