Malala Fund is working for a world where all girls can learn and lead without fear. Malala and Ziauddin Yousafzai founded Malala Fund in 2013 to champion every girl’s right to 12 years of free, safe, quality education.

Story

We, four brave women from Michael Swann Building, are running from Dundee to Edinburgh on the 14th of August to challenge ourselves whilst promoting the education of girls from low-income countries. By doing something different outwith our comfort zone we hope to equip children with the tools to change their life through providing them a better education. We would be grateful if you could support us and donate to the charities we have chosen: SLA (Scottish Love in Action) and the MALALA fund. Please donate to both or either of those charities through the “Just Giving” links below:

The 100 miles course along the coast of Fife is divided into 16 chunks, and each of us will run 4 of them. We will start 6-7 am and may finish at 2-3 am the next day. We have been training for months and here are each of our stories.

Kumiko Samejima (Earnshaw lab) started slow jogging about 6 years ago. Thanks to supporting and encouragement from family and friends, she has run >8,000 km in total and aims to reach 10,000 km (the equivalent of ¼ length of our earth or Edinburgh to Tokyo) at the end of 2022. Running let her find so much beauty and fun in Edinburgh and beyond.

Fernanda Cisneros Soberanis (Earnshaw lab), after stopping running for more than 6 months, this January, started again. She couldn’t run more than 1 km. Kumiko suggested to her to do this challenge and some people told her that she was crazy. At that point, she was not able to run 10 km. Now, this is the minimum distance that she runs. She is happy to say that she has been through many beautiful places with her legs.

Meg is a fourth-year PhD student in Adele’s lab. She’s always loved being outside (be that running, hiking, swimming in the sea, or lying on the grass with friends and ice cream), but discovered she liked long-distance runs when a last-minute space opened up for the Skye half marathon that Stefan Galander’s (who some of you may remember) running club were going to. She’s looking forward to spending the 14th hanging out with some great people on Fife’s beautiful beaches – with some running interspersed.

Toni McHugh (Welburn Lab/COIL) is a last-minute recruit, she enjoys getting muddy, running out on trails and in the hills. She has recently been training for a personal challenge, to run the Yorkshire 3 Peaks at the end of July. She is looking forward to the run along the beautiful Fife coastal path and helping the team raise money for a great cause.
