Help our life-saving work: in 2010, 98% of newborn deaths took place in the developing world, and a quarter of those were due to trouble with breathing. We provide training in resource-poor parts of the world to reduce those numbers and improve outcomes for the newborn.

Story

Thanks for visiting my JustGiving page!  I'm running in the Hackney Half Marathon on 19 May  in support of NICHE International.  (Disclaimer: I'm a trustee).

What is NICHE International?  98% of deaths within the first few hours of life occur in low- and middle-income countries, 75% of those due to breathing difficulties. These numbers can be dramatically improved through simple three-day training programmes which we raise money to teach.

Niche International arranges newborn life support courses taught by  leading resuscitation experts and paediatricians to  healthcare workers. We have been running the newborn care course  in Cameroon since 2014 and have trained 200 healthcare workers and 20 instructors. We are now starting work in Liberia. The programme is designed to be entirely sustainable: as we teach more courses so we will have a faculty of fully trained  instructors in Cameroon to continue the training. The programme will then be self-sustaining in that country, freeing us to do more in Liberia where, since the Ebola crisis, training is even more desperately needed.
