Sam's Gift - London to Paris · 21 June 2017

After losing our loved one to T-cell Lymphoma we wanted to help other teenagers and young adults with cancer throughout this difficult time. We will provide a journey box giving something positive at a time when it is needed most. Some of the items were inspired by our loved one Sam Nicholls.

Story

Thank you for taking your time to visit our page!

So we have decided to take on the challenge of cycling from London to Paris to support Sam's Gifts and raise money for their 'Journey Box' most of the cyclists were family or friends of Sam's and feel the loss that it has brought. We thought we would do something positive to work along side the positive nature of the charity!

Currently there are 15 cyclists

Starting in London, we will cover just over 300 miles, this 4 day route takes us from our starting place in Bexhill to Dover and then over to the France. For most, if not all of those riding with us, it's their first time cycling such as distance and for quite a few of us, we have not rode a bike since childhood (which for some is a long, long time) so this is no mean feat.

Please see below for details of why we are riding for Sam's Gift.

"Sam's Gift" was started following the loss of our son/brother in November 2014 to T-cell lymphoma. Sam had been a strong and fit young man who had just completed his degree with a bright future ahead of him. His diagnosis was a shock but he showed great strength and positivity. He spent most of his battle with cancer in The Christie hospital in Manchester. We wanted his memory to live on whilst helping other teenagers and young adults who are also fighting the disease. There are approximately 150 new diagnosis of cancer in 16yr-25yr olds at The Christie alone, each year. It is difficult at any age and as young adults you know what your life should look like and what should be ahead of you but cancer makes you face something you shouldn't have contemplate at that age. The medical teams do a fantastic job at caring for the physical needs but there is also the emotional and mental effects of a cancer diagnosis. With this in mind and with consultation with The Christie community liaison nurse we have developed our 'Journey Boxes'.

There were certain things Sam had wanted to do and this also gave us inspiration for the items which we have included in the box. At the moment we are only providing these for the teenagers and young adults at The Christie and we hope that the boxes will help these young people through a difficult time and motivate and inspire them on their journey.

The boxes can be personalised and include a number of items for example, a journal (to write thoughts and feelings), writing set, pen drive (with help sites, space to hold photos and films to watch during treatment), a fingerprint jewellery set. We have had an extremely positive response from those who have received a box so far.

Our aim for the future is to provide the boxes to other hospitals nationally.
