Me and my Dad will be taking part in a 5K run this sunday to raise money for the new Maryam Centre to be opened this Ramadan- (extension to the East London Mosque). A 7 story building just for our sisters, mothers, aunts & nieces. A girls madrasah, womens gym, loads of halls and classrooms for events, classes, recreation. Plus there'll be a proper creche, alh ending the madness of kids running around annoying everyone at huge events! Much needed- these days sisters are usually squeezed into mediocre spaces/facilities (if there are any!), this needs to change and we can make it happen.

Having virtually grown up in East London Mosque, I can testify to what a value this would be for young people. ELM isn't just a masjid in the typical sense, but have really actualised what is meant by 'a hub for the community'. I joined some circles  there when I was in my school days- to be frank I only initially came for the football and munch, the circle was just 'the boring part'. But before I knew it, brs gave me roles in organising the football, become a rep for my school etc, and we all started to feel a sense of pride & ownership. Many of my friends were empowered similarly from a young age, and we are what we are today because of that alh. This is what makes ELM unique in its contributions to the community, it really develops people & gives them a vision- instead of just delivering services.
