Thank you for visiting our page.
We are supporting Sarcoma UK, a national charity that funds vital research, offers support for anyone affected by sarcoma cancer and campaigns for better treatments. Sarcoma is a type of cancer that develops in the bone and soft tissue. It is difficult to diagnose and one of the hardest to treat. By supporting, we can help change this. Your donation will help researchers find answers, keep our Support Line open, and raise awareness to improve treatment and standards of care for Sarcoma patients and their families.
15 people are diagnosed with sarcoma every day in the UK. That’s about 5,300 people a year. Our very special Sarcoma Warrior Adrian Rees-Owens was one of the unlucky ones to be diagnosed March 2021.
After being misdiagnosed by our local GP as nothing to worry about, raising awareness and funds for both South Wales Sarcoma Service and Sarcoma UK is our utmost priority this year. Both charities not only supported Adrian through this difficult time but also supported the family.
In March 2021 we as a family received the devastating news that Adrian a young fit individual had the diagnosis of a rare myxoid lyposarcoma tumour in his thigh.
Never had we heard of it and never in a million years did we ever think a small lump around 3cm in the hamstring would grow as much as 10cm x 8cm x 6cm in depth in a matter of months. This resulted in intense radiotherapy every day for 5 weeks, a 11 hour surgery followed by an emergency 6 hour surgery due to complications, removing 80% of his hamstring and a skin graft from his back.
He spent 7 days under a heated blanket to aid the grafting site and as soon as he was able to get into a chair he was only thinking of one thing...getting back to being active again.
After numerous trips back as an inpatient at Morriston hospital due to various complications Adrian couldn't wait to get back walking and later swimming before cycling.
9 months on and he finally reached his 1st goal, and completed a sprint triathlon in Ammanford on April 10th, his next goal was to complete a middle distant triathlon in Fishguard on the 18th June before aiming towards his ultimate goal and completing Tenby Ironman Wales (2.4 miles swim, followed by 112miles bike, followed by a 26.2mile run- all in under 17hours)
Total inspiration is an understatement and never have we met anyone so determined and positive, where we are constantly reminded each appointment by his amazing Sarcoma specialist Dr Warbrick-Smith and his incredible team.
Adrian will continue to be closely monitored by the team every 3 months and continue to have scans and xrays to ensure there is no re-occurrence.
As a family, fund raising and raising awareness has already begun and will continue through out the year.
My challenge for the next 6 months, along with my friend Kayleigh Howell and our amazing SCO Health & Fitness gym family is for the 11 hours of surgery Adrian had to remove his tumour, we will complete 11 challenges!
Challenges that have already been completed are: Ammanford triathlon along side Adrian, Swansea Triathlon, Swansea half marathon, Fishguard triathlon, Walk4Sarcoma around our community & Trek4Sarcoma up Penyfan with family, friends and of course TeamSCO, 11 hour Row4Sarcoma on a concept gym rower, Bala Olympic distance triathlon and the London Marathon. Our next challenge was to take on the Welsh 3 peaks November 5th but the weather went against us which we will reshedule in April and finally Splash4Sarcoma on New Year's day, where we will brave the Welsh sea.
Many more events have taken place where we have been out with our collection buckets and also a grand raffle where over 1500 tickets were sold for some great prizes.
We are aiming to raise as much awareness as we can and also as much money as we can to not only thank team Sarcoma but also help fund more research into this rare cancer. Our aim is to reach £11,000 with everyones support.
Please dig deep, any donation will be greatfully received (don't forget to tick the gift aid box if you are a tax payer this could help double our target)
