Over the last 3 years, I have been helping our brothers and sisters in Tanzania through UK based charity Islamic Help. We have provided massive support in respect of food parcels and water supply for orphans which has benefited them greatly. In'Sha'Allah this year, through the Orphan Project, with your help I want us to make a huge change to the lives of orphans in the long term in order to steer them out of the poverty cycle which has been crushing them for generations. 

Tanzania is one of the 8^th poorest countries in the world, ranking 153 in the HDI index. The Tanzanian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare estimates that there are 2.5 million orphans and vulnerable children in Tanzania, of which only about 6% receive external support. The biggest challenges the orphan’s in Africa and Tanzania generally face are:

1. severe lack of food, nutrition, water and quality education - 99% of the orphans end up in a grinding cycle of poverty; 
2. lack of housing, most of the orphans end up either in child manual labour or on the street begging; and
3. most of them end up on the street involved in petty crimes and often die young unable to break out of the poverty cycle. 

The Orphan Project

In partnership with Islamic Help, the Orphan Project will aim to choose the most needy orphans from poor villages in Tanzania in order to bring them the best possible private grammar school education in town, thus ensuring they break the poverty chain and inevitably through education they can work towards a brighter future for themselves and their families. The project aims to: 

1. choose the most needy orphans from remote rural villages where there are no schools or any way of making a living; 
2. enrol those orphans in the BEST QUALITY schools as boarding and provide them this rare chance to excel in life;
3. provide transport facilities to orphans for travelling to school and home for day scholars; 
4. protect them from starving by providing food and 3 sufficient healthy meals at school and their home; and 
5. provide a health insurance card, so they can access free health treatment throughout the year from a private hospital. 

To bring the Orphan Project to life, each orphan will need £500 GBP a year, broken down as follows, in order to achieve the following ambitious objectives: 

• £250 GBP a year for education/school fee, school uniform, stationery and books and bags; and  
• £250 GBP a year for food, transport and health insurance card.

With your help, this project aims to raise £10,000 to support and provide a future for 20 orphans. With your support, I am confident that we can achieve this target In'Sha'Allah and exceed it so that we can continue to provide a future for many more orphans in Tanzania. It truly is a long term life changing project.

Orphans have a unique place in Islam and share an affinity with Prophet Muhammad SAW who lost both his parents by the age of six. His orphaned childhood is the subject of some of the earliest verses of the Qur’an:

"Did He not find you an orphan and give you shelter?" (Qur’an 93:6)

This affinity between the orphan and the Prophet SAW is expressed with great clarity in the Hadith  There is a promise of Paradise for anyone who looks after an orphan:

"I, and the one who looks after an orphan, will be together like this in the next world", then he raised his index and middle fingers together leaving no space in between." {Saheeh al-Bukhaari-Hadith Muslim}.
