Maisy and myself want to take the plunge and challenge ourselves to Swim 22 so that we can do our bit to help raise awareness about diabetes. This means swimming 22 miles which is the width of the English Channel in 12 weeks. (Swimming is NOT my strongest point but I’m willing to give it a go!!)
Diabetes is a life long condition affecting more than 4.6 million people. Around 90% of people with diabetes in the UK have type 2 and around 10% of people with diabetes in the UK have Type 1 - this a a serious, lifelong condition.
Diabetes is a serious condition where your blood glucose level becomes too high. There are two main types, Type 1 and Type 2. When you have Type 1 diabetes you can’t make any insulin at all, or if you have Type 2 then the insulin you make either can’t work effectively or you can’t produce enough of it.
Over a long period of time this can cause complications. Damaging your heart, eyes, feet and kidneys.
But with the right treatment and care people can live a healthy life.
Diabetes UK is very close to my heart as they do an amazing job at creating life changing new treatments and discovering new things all the time. They also have counsellors to provide support and infortmation during difficult times and to provide help for people dealing with the highs and lows in life. They work with the NHS to make sure care for people with diabetes is always getting better and also many other fabulous things! ✨
