Story
I am running the London Marathon 2019 in aid of Muscular Dystrophy UK. Although I am a personal trainer and love health and fitness, it’s safe to say I’ve never been a runner, and up until a few weeks ago I had never run further than a mile! Luckily I have a year to train, but it will still be a huge challenge for me.
This charity is hugely close to our hearts. Here is my story:
Becker muscular dystrophy is a very rare muscle wasting condition that causes muscles to weaken and waste over time, leading to increasing and often severe disability. In some cases, Becker muscular dystrophy can often lead to life -threatening health problems, as the muscles of the heart and lungs also waste and weaken.
When my brother, Tom, who is now 12, was diagnosed with BMD 2 years ago, one of the things that we all struggled to accept is that there is no treatment and no cure for the condition. In the early days after the diagnosis, it felt as if there was no hope. But MDUK have given us hope, with every penny that they raise for vital research. I am running the London Marathon to join their fight and their fundraising, to give hope to my family and to all those others affected by Muscular Dystrophy - together hopefully we can raise awareness, find a treatment that works and one day find a cure.
