We support people with myasthenia and their families, increase public and medical awareness of the condition and raise funds for research and support staff. Our aim is to make life easier for people with myasthenia and their families by providing information, advice and support.

Story

Stuart, Jane, Sue and I will be cycling Lands End to John O’Groats to raise money for two charities.

Myaware - Fighting Myasthenia Gravis together

What is myasthenia? The myasthenias are a group of neuromuscular conditions. They are rare but also manageable. You aren’t alone, myasthenia can affect anyone, old or young and of any gender or nationality. Myasthenia means muscle weakness. This is confined to the voluntary muscles, muscles whose action is normally controlled by an individual's will such as the arm and leg muscles, and does not affect either the autonomic system or sensation. The autonomic system regulates the functions of the heart, stomach and intestines. People with myasthenia have characteristically fatigable muscles and the harder people with myasthenia try, the weaker they get. They are often strongest in the mornings and get weaker during the day. Treatments generally work well and myasthenia doesn’t necessarily get worse over time but at present it isn’t curable so the best thing is to accept and adapt your lifestyle to accommodate it. Most treatments have side effects but with careful management from your doctors, most people learn to handle them. It will probably be a marathon not a sprint.

Yeovil District Hospital

Our local hospital where we have spent too many times over the last two years. Many different departments trying to find out what was wrong with Terry. The service we received was always outstanding and help Terry and I through difficult times. Again this year (2020) the NHS have shown again how amazing they are by putting them self on the front line and continue to do so throughout the Coronavirus pandamic. Stuart and Jane (fellow end to enders) work within the NHS and so does many more of the MSCG group.
