Story

Sharrocks is flying the flag for the FIFA World Cup and raising money for charity.

Its office at Watsons’ Mill, Ride’s Passage, off High Street, Sheerness, has been decorated with flags for all the 32 countries taking part in the competition, which is being held in Russia.

Staff at the insurance brokers are also joining in the fun at both the Kent base and at its northern operation in Preston, Lancashire, by swapping their normal office attire for clothes featuring the national colours.

Throughout the four-week tournament, employees will be wearing red, white or blue, except for when England play when they will wear football shirts provided by the company.

Sharrocks has launched a justgiving page and hopes clients will back the team’s efforts by donating.

Staff could also be boosting the charity funds - if they choose not to wear their England shirt for the whole day, they face being red carded and will be asked to pay a penalty fee of £10.

Money raised will go to the Cleft Lip And Palate Association (Clapa) - a cause close to the hearts of the Sharrocks’ team as managing director Alan Doucy’s son Gene was born with the condition in February.

Mr Doucy said: “The work of charities such as Clapa is invaluable when you receive such a diagnosis during a pregnancy.

“With approximately one in every 700 children born with a cleft lip and palate each year - and numbers increasing annually - this charity needs all the help it can get.

“They provide support for families, a wealth of information and special bottles to help cleft babies with their feeding, which can be really tricky. Imagine trying to suck a drink through a straw with an extra hole in it.

“No two clefts are exactly the same, so some families need a lot of help. We’re really lucky with Gene - he is feeding well and thriving.

“I’m delighted my team has got behind this initiative in such a positive way and hope we can raise lots of money for Clapa.”

Sharrocks has a great track record supporting charities and 10 years ago launched its Send A Smile Foundation, which has seen money donated to several charities, as well as individual causes.

England’s FIFA World Cup campaign kicks off at 7pm on Monday, June 18 when Gareth Southgate’s men take on Tunisia at the Volgograd Arena in Volgograd.
