Story

Who said the romance is dead?
Well after almost 8 years of marriage we have decided to raise money
together this time and what could be more romantic than to enter a sweaty,
violent boxing tournament right?

We will be taking part in a White
Collar Boxing event on 16th Dec to raise money again for Cancer Research UK.
The event will be held at the Barbican Centre in York with over 800
spectators so get in touch if you would like to attend. (Details at bottom
of page)

And before you ask, we are not fighting each other. I am not that brave :)

So why........

Several reasons but the main motive being two of the most important people
in our lives have been affected with Cancer and are the
reason we continue to raise awareness and money for cancer research.
With an ageing population Cancer will now affect one in two of us directly
usually in later life and many of us do not give it much thought until it
affects ourselves or someone close to us.

Becs Mum (My Mother in Law and Wonder-woman)

I have known my mother in law since meeting my wife 10 years ago,

She is truly one of a kind and a true inspiration for so many people, a true
fighter who has overcome cancer several times over through an ever positive
attitude and a determination. First diagnosed at the age of 20 with Hodgkins
Disease she underwent intense radiotherapy. However as a result of the large
amounts of radiotherapy this was to cause problems 30 years on when she
developed breast cancer in 2004 and needed a mastectomy. Then in 2008 Sue
received the devastating news that she had a soft tissue sarcoma her shoulder
which meant she had to have her right arm and shoulder amputated. Amazingly

only weeks after losing her arm Sue was helping us paint our home and
later has taught herself to paint again to a high standard with what would have
been her less dominant arm, Cancer research have used her paintings on xmas
cards and Sue even wrote a children’s book for my two children complete with
various paintings of local sites that are meaningful to our family. After
losing her arm and shoulder life was good again until 18 months later when the
Cancer spread to both lungs and she was told she had only months to live. But
with the same determination and the wonderful care at St James's Hospital in
Leeds, she beat the odds yet again and underwent successful chemotherapy but
unfortunately was diagnosed earlier this year with Breast Cancer for the
second time, Sue has dealt with this now in her own incredible
way and is now again Cancer free and enjoying the best of health and
during these last 7 years got to see her beautiful daughter, my wife get
married and make her the proudest grandma of two very special grandchildren.
Sue remains eternally grateful to cancer research and hopes we can truly show
support and raise as much money as possible.

Jack (Step dad)

Jack was diagnosed in 2006 with Non-Hodgkin
Lymphoma, he had a

rare type called Mantel Cell which only occurs within around 5% of NHL

patients. Fortunately at the time the doctors found a bone marrow match with
Jacks’s sister and successfully carried out a bone marrow transplant although
unknown to the doctors at the time she was terminally ill and unfortunately
passed away shortly after. If losing his sister was not hard enough it was then
apparent that he had been given a new immune system (via bone marrow
transplant) from a terminally ill person. Jack then developed GVHD Graft versus
host disease which basically means the new inherited cells see the body’s cells
as foreign and attack them.  11 years on and Jack is fighting strong
despite many further challenges he continues to be a hero to me and the
toughest man I know. To me Jack is like a dad and I really hope to raise as
much money as possible for Cancer research to show my respect and hopefully I
will get a win on the night to make him proud.

Everyone has their own story and experiences of cancer but what

many of us share is our determination to beat cancer and refuse to give up, not
a single week passes without me worrying about my wife, children or friends and
family being diagnosed or affected by cancer is some way. I want to continue to
raise money and help find a cure for cancers. Please help.
